Whereas Gathering Blue was more of a companion novel to The Giver than a sequel, this is a traditional sequel and completes the trilogy. The book takes place 6 years after the events in Gathering Blue and follows the life of Matty, now the Messenger for his new village. What follows is a string of events that seem to be logically and symbolically consistent with each other, but are difficult to relate in any powerful allegorical sense like the pervious two novels. The story is still enjoyable, mainly because it brings resolution to the previous two stories, albeit doing so with a weak plot and creating a few more mysteries that will stay unresolved. This is not suitable as stand-alone book, but is must-read for those who enjoyed the first two books. It's a very quick read too.
