it was amazing
bookshelves: 2019-reads, fantasy

This book started out slow for me, but then around page 180 something happened and I couldn't put it down the rest of the way. I loved it. This is a slow burn of a novel, which takes its time establishing its world with a strange circus that moves around the world only appearing at night and full of very strange denizens. It's also a love story about two magical combatants pitted against one another in a contest neither understands, and it's another love story about a young man who dreams of the strange circus he once saw in his own backyard. The story unfolds slowly and organically, and it unfolds in two different time periods that finally converge as the book reaches its climax.

Morgenstern's language is wonderfully evocative and the book's slow pacing was deeply refreshing to me. Wonderful book!
