I picked up this book to listen to for inspiration after I put myself on a social media diet, and if it did anything, this book confirmed that it is a good thing to cut back on screentime, especially in front of my kids. The first few chapters were the most interesting to me - they covered some of the detrimental effects of too much screentime for (and around) younger kids and how that can affect family relationships.

The chapters with information on screentime for teenagers were a little much for younger parents like me, since they mostly focused on porn and its effects on social relationships. I do think it’s helpful for parents to be aware of the prevalence of porn and bullying on social media platforms, and I think the book did present that realistically, and some parents probably need their eyes opened in this area. More of the book was focused on those aspects than I thought though, I was expecting more on the effects of screentime on the family itself.

I did not agree with the author’s view of some porn use being “normal”, and her approval of dads giving their sons “safe” porn. That was ridiculous to me. There is so much research out now about the bad effects of porn and the addictive potential, I don’t see why she should okay any porn use. I also didn’t agree with other sexual morals she mentioned in this book, and I wouldn’t handle conversations exactly the way she suggested because we are coming from two different moral foundations (hers secular, mine a biblical perspective). She also included a whole chapter on parenting advice that I don’t think fit the topic of this book.

Overall, this book was not as helpful as I wanted it to be, but I thought the first few chapters had such great information and points to consider, I’d recommend it for that.
