I almost gave this book 4 stars. It did some things better than the other books. I thought this book did do a couple things better than the previous books. I thought the story behind Bran Davies, his mother, and father was quite compelling and Susan Cooper did a great job of creating mystery about that and revealing it at a good time.

I still think the missions weren't always clear. The whole second half of the book was about waking the Sleepers but beyond it being said in a poem there was no real motivation as to why are we waking the Sleepers? What are they going to do? Again, I think things like this artificially make the book really short when it would have been fine for it to be longer.

I did like Caradog Prichard, the Grey King and the foxes though. It made for a reasonably interesting story. One thing that is starting to grate on me about this being a "children's" series is that I don't feel like the mission or the people in it (like Will, Bran, etc.) are ever in any actual danger. It's hard to get worried and care about the outcome when you never feel that it's in doubt. One more book. It's a bit longer so let's hope they use that space for more plot and character development as opposed to more un-driven plot points.
