Great characters and obviously deep research have allowed Polites to craft a fresh and compelling historical fiction. Using the harsh summer heat as a constant backdrop and excellent plot device, the author, through his heroine, juxtaposes the fears and challenges of a widow during the post Civil War reconstruction era, allowing the reader to almost feel the swelter as it deepens, both in the weather and the mystery.

Augusta faces the challenges with a hidden spirit that appears when she needs it most, even if that means stepping out of the role expected of the women of her day.

If I had one complaint it was that this book is written in the first person. I find that most books writtin int he first person tend to trip up the speed of the book. In this case, many of the sentences are short, slowing the pace and making the book feel as though reading it was at times trudging through mire. However, this was not constant and I found the history to be very satisfying.
