really liked it

I didn't expect sunshine and roses from a book titled "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter," but I was still unprepared for heartbreak in this story.

The plot is a bit meandering, but it centers around a deaf/mute man named Mr. Singer living a simple and quiet life in a small town. The other denizens of the town, especially four people, circle around him, telling him their dreams, schemes, fears, and wishes. Each person's life is contracted in some way, limited, blocked, or constrained. But they yearn strongly.

I was drawn into each character's tale, hoping with them that their needs would be met, that things would get better for them.

McCullers wrote of loneliness like no one else. The title of the book becomes so poignant by the end that it's like a line from a poem.
