So, having read a couple of random Spenser books, I thought I would get a little organised, and start at the very beginning. The Spenser in The Godwulf Manuscript is a different Spenser from the later novels, the Spenser who is completely committed to Susan. He's angrier, he's edgier, he's less moral, he's more self-loathing, the whole book was a lot more noir than the later ones that I've read. I thought this book was great and I enjoyed it a lot. Spenser here is - not precisely likeable, but the character is very appealing. I have to confess I like the random literary nods, and I like his wise-cracking. Good job, Mr Robert B. Parker. RIP.
