A solid and eminently readable book, but a little surfacey and predictable for my taste. It's the story of a mother and daughter, the mother facing a cancer diagnosis while her daughter completes medical school and makes decisions about marriage.

Characterization is generally what pulls me into stories, and I felt as if deeper characterization was buried in logistical details in this narrative. I was not surprised by either of the main character's epiphanies when they got there, so the impact wasn't as broad as it might have been.

While I was moved by several scenes, I was never fully sucked in by the story. While it was well told, there was nothing startling to engage me more fully. The characters were good people and the conflicts were short lived and without serious consequences. Maybe the whole thing was just too nice?
