really liked it
bookshelves: book-club

This is an unusual book for me to give five stars to, as I tend to like very complex novels. This was a fairly straightforward story in that it followed one character throughout the book, but the story itself was so compelling and often took unexpected turns. I guess I would say this book is deceptively simple. It was a book club selection, and this is why I love book club; I probably never would have picked this up on my own.

I really enjoyed Matt's relationships with the other characters, especially watching how they changed over the course of the novel. His evolution from absentee dad to soon-to-be single parent balances nicely with what he learns about the other people in his life.

The movie is also well worth watching, a very faithful adaptation of the book without needing to include every detail.
