My Life Next Door started strong with its modern take on Romeo and Juliet but lulled in the middle before picking up pace again towards the end. The author seemed to drag out parts when it wasn’t needed thus slowing down the pace and running the risk of losing the reader. Despite that, Fitzpatrick created two main characters in Jase (I’d consider him a Pacey from Dawson’s Creek) and Sam that many readers will enjoy as they experience the ups and downs of their first loves. In essence, this book is about love, friends, family, and growing up while dealing with real human issues. Worth a read if you’re looking for a book that isn’t all about high school drama and ugly ducklings being turned into princesses.
