This was just a really gorgeous, low-angst romance novel. There are two different relationships we get to see here, that of Tanner and Cole in the present day and also the relationship between Tom and Charlie falling in love back in 1948 told through Tom's journal entries.

This book begins a year after the death of Tanner's beloved wife, Emma. Emma was in love with an old farmhouse and the two had always planned to live out their futures there so when Emma dies Tanner buys the house she always wanted. However, he feels lost and unsure about what to do with it now he's there.

In comes Cole. Cole is fresh out of a 4 year stint in prison and struggling to find a job now that he's a convicted felon. Then he meets Tanner, who offers him a swap saying that if Cole comes to work on his house then he can stay there. It's here where Cole uncovers a journal hidden under a floorboard in the barn, the journal of Tom. Immediately he becomes intrigued with uncovering the truth behind who Tom and Charlie were, what happened to them and how the barn got set on fire.

It ends up becoming something that Tanner and Cole share, this need to find out more about these men from the past and they start reading through the journal entries together which leads to them spending more and more time with one another. When they begin to spend more time together they also start to realise that there may be some feelings blossoming between the two of them.

This really is just a beautiful, sweet book. I did think it would be more angsty reading the blurb but it's really not, it's a very quiet novel. I thought it was beautiful and i'd definitely recommend it.
