3 1/2 stars. I have heard this story before, but I can't remember where! In any case, it became very predictable for me, but was still a classic to appreciate. What really makes me love this book is the language! I love Dumas - I love that he tells a story like he's there in person, making a few aside comments and referencing historical events or works of art or literature with that same tone of voice that says, "You know what I mean, right?" He is a pro at making social commentary in the guise of simply describing a scene, and he's hilarious about it! I'll be using this book (and the intro and footnotes that were so helpfully included) as a reference itself to many of the books and art that Dumas mentioned. And now, more than anything else, I want to see a black tulip with my own eyes!
