I like this book but did not love it, although I certainly appreciate its enduring message and the slice of history it portrayed, particularly its effect on the Nolan family in the early 1900s, and how symbolic that was of the experience of so many of our families. Interestingly, I found myself craving a sequel to follow up on Francie, Neely, Laurie, Katie and the rest of the family, to explore the impact of the war and the romantic events that take place toward the end of this story. Alas, we left the Nolans before finding out how they fare in the longer run!
