I like Mary Higgins Clark. No matter how distracting your environment or schedule, they’re an easy read. Despite the fact that many of her books have 12-plus major characters, all Clark’s thrillers are told from multiple points of view and she excels at making her protagonists sympathetic and distinctive from the rest of the characters. The chapters are also short, often no more than two or three pages, and the tone is conversational, making it easy to read whenever you have a few free minutes.

It has been a number of years since I’ve read Clark but I did notice some “craft of writing” issues in this particular book. There were a number of instances of info dump and more than a few, “as you know…” moments, where one character reiterates information that has already been provided to the reader as a segue into the next plot point. As I said, I haven’t read Clark in quite awhile but I don’t remember running across either of these issues in her earlier books. Maybe I just forgot. In any case, those two issues were glaring enough to alter my review from a 3-star to a 2-star. The throughline – the story itself – it just fine and if you don’t read with an eye towards craft, the above-listed issues probably won’t interfere with your enjoyment of this book.
