I really enjoyed this unique and funny easy reader.

For anyone who has spent time around children under the age of three, Baby Monkey will be instantly recognizable as a sweet little toddler who can't quite dress himself just yet. Every time Baby Monkey tried to put his pants on in this book, I was reminded of my own kids struggling to put their clothes on facing the right way and with all limbs in their proper places, and it made me laugh. I also loved the labeled Ziploc baggies from which he eats his snacks, and all the adorable faces he makes throughout the book. It's not often that calling a book cute is a compliment, but it really is a positive thing in this case.

Though the text is directed at beginning readers, the illustrations add an additional layer of sophistication to the book that has appeal beyond the early elementary age group. Hidden in the background of Selznick's illustrations of Baby Monkey in his office are images related to each of Baby Monkey's cases. Though many of these are likely to be missed by very young kids reading on their own, they provide a great opportunity for older siblings or adults to jump in and enjoy the book with a new reader. Also fun are the ridiculous index and fictitious bibliography at the back of the book.
