really liked it

King Lion challenges all the animals to a race to see who is fastest, but chaos ensues when all the animals point out their differences that would make them the fastest! How can Lion be fair to everyone? He changes his competition by comparing only similar ways of movement like flying, running, and swimming as well as some other unique ways animals move.

This non-fiction picture book covers multiple non-fiction content and concepts including how animals move, animal body parts, and speed sequencing. Children either reading aloud or being read to will enjoy that this information is presented in more of a story format rather than just dry facts. Lion’s competition makes the concepts exciting and creates drama all the way to the end. Large size text font and easy to digest small paragraphs make this a good choice for new readers, those that may have trouble processing large amounts of text, and adults reading to classes or groups. Text reading level appears to be at or on a 2nd grade level, with an interest level of Pre-K through 4th grade. Carolyn Le’s illustrations complement the action in the text and give anthropomorphic humor by having the animals like Lion react in dramatic ways to the competition. As in all Arobordale publications, this title contains many book extras that encourage recall, extend learning, and can be used for further study of the topic. Most helpful are the chart of all Lion’s winners with the common animal name with the winning speeds and the speed sequencing page which explains how we compare speeds of animals who all move on or in different ways. There are also more educational materials available to teachers and parents at www.ArbrordalePublishing.com.

I would recommend this book for purchase by any school or public library.
