Having loved the first few Derek Strange books, this one really disappointed me.

For whatever reason, this book didn't grip me like the other Pelecanos that I've enjoyed. It's hard for me to identify exactly what went wrong. Maybe it's the lack of ever-present danger, or maybe it's the cartoonish villains.

Not being enthralled with the book, I started to notice more little things that bothered me, and everything fell apart.

First, the pop culture references are really ham-fisted. I won't go into details, but for a guy who is supposed to have a great ear for dialogue Pelecanos really botched it in a few places.

More troubling, Spero Lucas has the exact same casual misogyny as Derek Strange. In the Strange books I took it for a complicating character flaw, but two main characters in a row who treat women purely as means is a disturbing trend.
