3.5 stars

My first Edith Wharton, and I wasn't sure what to expect. I'd heard that it was depressing, but the audiobook mentioned it ending in tragedy, so I spent most of the short book waiting for tragedy to strike.

It reminded me a bit of The Great Gatsby, with the tragic ending and focus on a subject that I don't enjoy (infidelity in marriage) but still with sympathetic characters. The writing was pretty most of the time, but felt a little much (a little pretentious?) at other times.

Overall I enjoyed it as much as one can enjoy a train wreck book, ha.
