I really wish GoodReads had half stars, because I am hesitant to give it the same rating as Remarkable Creatures...but I can't bring myself to bring it up to the next star.

The first in a series of four prequels to the Cirque du Freak series, this book tells the story of a young Larten Crepsley and how he became a vampire. It's interesting enough. Fans of the series will surely be fans of the prequels, and even those that have not read the series may find this book enjoyable. It's decently written. Larten and the other characters, are realistic (as realistic as vampires can be) with their fair share of faults and human emotions. I'm not sure if this book can be considered to stand on it's own, though. While one needs no prior knowledge of the series to understand what's going on, in the end, the reader is kind of left hanging with the introduction of a new mysterious spy and the "To Be Continued..."
