Tim I wrote: I was prepared to love this novel, but I was not prepared for the loneliness and gloom of the narrative perspective. The desolation of the landscape is reflected in the isolation of Minna Losk, from whose perspective we receive the narration. There is little dialogue/conversation in the novel. The prose is beautiful, the descriptions of the landscapes are stark and anthropomorphic, and the grotesque qualities of human nature are explored, but almost too clinically. I felt sad in reading it and felt little hope for the characters, nor any sense of redemption. Anna Solomon captured the deep isolation that people can feel, and portrayed it honestly, a bit too honestly for my taste, or perhaps too honestly for me to handle. In short, The Little Bride did not offer me hope, and Minna's story seemed like a series of cold transactions.
