The word that keeps rising to the front of my mind when I consider D’Agata’s writing is “lackluster.” I don’t know why. I guess I'm in the minority here, but I don't find it especially artful. My biggest problem, though, was that I assumed this would be about...well, a mountain. Maybe I shouldn't punish D'Agata for my false expectations, but there was a lot in here that seems pretty tangential.

Lest I be too harsh, I liked the book as a public service announcement, to create awareness and inspire a certain healthy suspicion of the U.S. government. But I would have done it differently.
