Aw this one is an absolute cupful of emotions! It's a soft and sad little middle-grade about Serenity who has so many secrets, and it's set right after the death of her mum. I loved themes of it so so much...like it's about grief and healing, but it's also about following your own moral compass and protecting people. There is so much heart in this book, it just...it's really moving.

...it also has...
➸ complicated messy brother/sister relationship
➸ #ownvoices black perspective
➸ talks about making the same mistakes as your parents
➸ super intensely talks about how important it is to speak up when someone else is getting hurt
➸ I also appreciated how it discussed falling for the "bad boy" and how Serenity had such mixed feelings about it. Jay wasn't a black-and-white character. He was a kid doing his best, but doing bad. And it was so sad omg.
➸ And an epic female friendship that I just adored!!
➸ and COOKING. there is delicious baking in it and my copy had a cake recipe in the back 👀 thank youuuuu

(It's very heavily religious, which is part of the family's culture in the book, but I'm not so much into religious books?? but idk it was important to the plot and characters' lives for sure.)
