This books starts out in calamity, and things just keep getting worse from there. Kady's planet is attacked, and she's lucky enough to be rescued by one of three nearby ships. But then there's a deadly infectious virus and a rogue AI and battles and explosions and spacewalks and grisly scenes to keep you up at night. On the up side, Kady is a snarky, smart 17-year-old with mad hacker skillz, which turn out to be essential to the plot. That alone would make for an engaging story, but then, when the AI wakes up, the book really starts to shine. The design of the entire book is clever, but when the AI speaks, the design transcends into art and poetry. The beauty shines all the more in contrast with the brutality.

I did not foresee some of the plot twists. The book had me skipping back to re-read sections and then say, "Aha! Clever!" a few times. In particular, the ending drives you to flip back and start over from the beginning. Worth doing for the layers you suddenly see revealed. Cleverly done!
