An historical novel that quite unexpectedly turns into a murder mystery. It takes place in the 16th century court of Ferrara, and is told from the point of view of Barbara of Austria, second wife of Alfonso II d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, who is suspected of poisoning his first wife, Lucrezia de Medici. I didn't have great expectations about this book, thought it would be something in the lines of Philippa Gregory latest novels (which I didn't enjoy quite so much) but it surprised me in a good way. I was particularly intrigued by Ferrara itself, having never heard much about it before. It's a Unesco World Heritage Site, and it's now been added to my list of places to visit soon.
