One of the most annoying and compelling books I've read as an adult. I nominated this as our first He-Man-Woman-Hater's bookclub selection of the year, and often felt like a total ass for forcing this tedious novel on my fellow man...other parts, I enjoyed it so much I wanted to keep it all to myself. The fellas' reaction was similarly divisive. The At Sea chapter is a tough mountain to climb (at well over 100 pages, Franzen shows no mercy, either), but worth getting over it to see this family spiral into their collective mess at the end of the novel. If I could go back, I'm still not sure if I'd recommend it to the book club, but I'm glad I read it.
