really liked it

The film is very faithful to the book, making only a few changes that are minor, so it's one rare case where seeing the movie might help the story. There's even a hint in the book that Kaui Hart Hemmings might have been thinking of George Clooney as the lead actor when she wrote the book.

Hemmings does an excellent job of capturing the dialogue of teens and their parents but some of the slang or memes will be hard to understand 50 years from now. In the edition that I read, there's an interview with Hemmings at the end. The surprise is that she originally didn't envision Joanie King having an affair. The affair becomes the linchpin for the real action in the book.
