To say this book was delightful is not giving it enough credit. Because while it was a delight to read about 16-year-old Katherine Mary O'Fallon's trip from Boston to Calgary, Alberta, her meeting of and marriage to handsome Mounty Mike Flannagan, and her subsequent life into the far northern reaches of Canada, it was also exciting, heart-wrenching, endearing, uplifting, and sometimes funny. I laughed out loud at Native Cree Sarah's tale of sending her husband out to chop wood and giving birth to twins before he returned to find her making dinner at the stove. There are bears and wolves and killer snow storms and diphtheria outbreaks and backwoods emergency surgery; things that a spoiled, weak, city-dweller like myself can not imagine living through.
