While it is good to have a spirited female protagonist, it is galling to have the author describe her as such a paragon of perfection: beautiful, charming, helpful, brave, kind, enterprising, excellent cook and housekeeper...and uncomplaining. I only wonder how come her first landlady threw her out.

First Line: The hotel attendant eyed me compassionately.
