Ian is a divorced former teacher who has decided to downsize. On his first night in his new apartment, he is a victim of a crime which toys with his memory. Through his healing, the usual quirky characters that Anne Tyler uses in her stories unfold. He describes himself at one point as someone who has spent a lifetime watching his life play out without ever getting very involved. As the reader, it feels as if he were the last to come to this realization. A story with lots of characters who get entangled in one another lives, as families do in what can only be described as a dysfunctional family that works- sort of. Classic Anne Tyler...
