The Fire Next Time consists of two letters written by James Baldwin, the first to his nephew also named James and the second one to the American people. The latter is the more illuminating one that dwells on James Baldwin's initial protest against his father and hence against religion (his father being a clergyman). His polemics against Christianity in particular in reinforcing slavery stand out as does his experiences with Elijah Mohammad and his views on the assertion black power that the Nation of Islam espoused. It is a short and a highly gripping work.
