** spoiler alert ** I really liked the beginning, and found myself drawn in by the description of Little Bee and the other refugees leaving the detention center. After that, the pace/energy seemed to be uneven. The narrative alternates between Little Bee and her English host, Sarah, but I thought the story got bogged down during Sarah's flashbacks, particularly as she describes her relationship with her lover. I suppose the male author felt he wanted to prove he could write about sex from a woman's point of view, but I found the description gratuitous. Furthermore, one of the sex scenes was just unrealistic -- that this wanna-be journalist would have sex with someone she was supposed to interview -- in his office no less. The ending was a bit of a cop-out where the writer leaves it up to the reader to determine how the final scene on the beach plays out.
