I picked up this book during a band practice and my bandmate said, "Oh you can have that. I can't read that awful shit." Had I but heeded his warning, I could have saved my self hours of mind abuse to rival any I have experienced. This book is shallow, unbelievable, and written at a fifth grade reading level. It is contradictory and just rings false. I agree with another good reads reader who said she feels for the author if he even experienced 1/10th of the abuse he described. However, I do not think that his descriptions of what he experiencened could really benefit anyone. There is a scene where the mother is trying to burn him to death on the stove and she says something like, "I read about this somewhere...now get on the stove and burn you bad boy!" Maybe she read about it in some sick horror-porn like this book. I read about half of it as I was sucked into its dark vortex of Saw-like violence and torture.

Finally I skimmed to the end and read an acccount from one of the teachers who "risked his job" to help the kid. The teacher said, "Back in those days child abuse was hidden 'in the closet' along with other unmentionable life-styles." That was really the kick in the gut from this book that left me lying in bed sick to my stomach. Gee, what kind of "unmentionable lifestyles" that are "in the closet" was he comparing to child abuse? ARRRGH! This is homophobic, pseudo-religious grandstanding crap and I can't hate it enough.

Ryn There is a great article from the NY times about what a lying sleaze bag the author really is. Here's a link. http://www.nytimes.com/2002/07/28/mag...
