My introduction to Tim O'Brien was "Tomcat in Love"--a very funny novel, told by a lovable cad of an unreliable narrator. "The Things They Carried" is brilliantly written, perceptive, unflinching and haunting. I'd recommend reading O'Brien's novels in the order they were written, moving from his dark and heavy Vietnam War novels to the much lighter Tomcat.
