it was amazing
bookshelves: ala-2012

What a delightful book! I wanted to say "delightful little book," but I guess 300 pages isn't all that little. It feels that way, though, because it is so fast-paced. I had a little trouble getting used to the fact that the characters had so many similar reference points to us as humans, even though it doesn't seem like humans exist in this universe. And the pirate bit felt slightly tacked-on. But other than that, I really enjoyed this book. I especially enjoyed that while there was enough action and dialog to keep kids interested, there was also enough deeper stuff going on to keep me, as a former English major, interested too. I kept trying to figure out which country Gerander most resembled from our history. I think this would be a great book to share with kids, but it's also good enough to just read it for yourself, if you're looking for something fun and quick.
