it was amazing
bookshelves: history

Read this book if you wonder why the United States is different from Europe. If you ever think about how life was for the people who lived here before Columbus. If you ever asked yourself why it it was 120 years after Columbus until Europeans establishes colonies in what is now the US? Why the Aztecs and the Inkas fell so quickly to a few Spanish ruffians?

I find the author's descriptions of life before Columbus's first expedition to convey sadness and sense of loss for what could have been. Disease, ruthlessness, and sheer bad luck destroyed 1/5 the world's people, erased entire civilizations, and reduced to millions poverty and despair. The book gives a much needed view of life that is long gone, and largely forgotten.

If you read this, and you should, you might also want to try "Lies my teacher told me", an alternate view of American history.
