Another PFH epic, but this one being a stand-alone novel. A fairly dystopic future is presented in which almost all power and wealth is controlled by a tiny number of mega corporations, who are not abashed at using military force to gain profits from interstellar colonies. As usual there are a number of viewpoint characters, and no sentimentality on the part of the author about their mortality. Most of the characters are unlikeable in one way or another, but you can see where they are coming from most of the time. Plot is ok, without the extreme deus ex of some of PFH's other works. Some chapters and scenes are unecessary filler that do not actually progress the story, but are possibly important for theme and setting. 3.5/5
