** spoiler alert ** This was one of those incredibly frustrating books for me. I loved the story, loved the imagery, loved the decadence. Loved the sex. LOT’S of sex in this book. It’s such a detailed, cast-of-thousands story that I could read it over and over and not get bored. And I hated the ending. HATED it. I read an early printing of the book, and I didn’t find anything redeeming at all about how the main issue wrapped up. Ugh. Awful ending.

The fact that Moorcock later re-wrote the ending bothered me almost as much. I mean for crying out loud, if Moorcock could see that the problems with the original version, why in God’s name didn’t he write the better version FIRST?! (choking on rage) Arrrrgh!

It’s just so disappointing, because the rest of the book was wonderful; one of my favorite fantasy/historical fiction books. And then he had to wreck it with probably the world’s worst deus ex machina.
