An awesome read. Do not let the fact that the main character is an alcoholic detective (which has mostly been done to death) put you off.

I especially enjoyed it (other than for the great writing) because I grew up in the middle of SA's move to democracy and there are so many differences between our cultures that are still seen as taboo to acknowledge.

Mr. Meyer does not shy away from this and does not try to create a homogeneous SA but (in my opninion) celebrates the diffrences as something good.

But if you couldn't give a flying hoot about the above you WILL still enjoy this book if you like reading crime novels.
