really liked it

I have a bad habit of reading series out of order. I read this book - which is book 7 of Anne Cleeves’ Shetland series - after reading a few of Anne’s Vera books. This did not pose too much of a problem as there are only a few references to the previous books.

It is set in winter in Shetland and opens with a funeral taking place in heavy rain. The rain triggers a landslide that smashes through a nearby croft, exposing a woman’s body.

The books principal character, Jimmy Perez, is charged with finding her killer.

With Anne Cleeves, you are assured that the descriptions of people and places will delight you and draw you in and leave that satisfying feeling of inhabiting a thoroughly believable and fascinating world.

The plot is a page-turner that pulled me through the book in a couple of days. Sadly the ending feels a little grafted on, somehow not connected with the main threads. I docked it one star for that, but I’ll certainly be catching up on books 1-6.
