Lords, swords, honor and intrigue flow through this story. Martin brings in details that lend depth to his characters, their settings and actions. I watched about half of the HBO series prior to reading this novel and then held off because the story on paper compelled me. Reading this story reminded me of how I felt reading the Lord of the Rings. The sweep and history of Martin's world provide a context for a plot that leaves you afraid to turn the page, a reader deep in care for Mr. Martin's characters and their fate.
