it was amazing

I loved this book. Pitts tells an intriguing, incredible, and provocative story. Thelma was not quite three and her brother, Luther was nine the night their parents were brutally murdered by a hate filled mob. Their father was the only African American farmer in the rural Alabama area who owned his owned land and although he was a hard worker, that didn't sit well with some of the whites in the area. Thelma, Luther and their grandfather left the family farm the next day, trying to put that horrific night behind them and starting a new life in Mobile, Alabama. Blessedly, Thelma remembers little of that night, unfortunately, Luther remembers every detail. The details haunt him and feeds an intense hatred for white people.

George Simon has lacked for nothing in his life. His father, John, a hardworking attorney, has seen that his family has the things he didn't when he was growing up. He remembers well the voyage to America and passing through Ellis Island. He remembers his humble beginnings and is ashamed of his beginnings. He is grateful for the opportunities America has afforded him and a chance to "erase" his beginnings. George wants nothing more than to be a good man.

Thelma, Luther, and George's lives intersect because of Pearl Harbor. George is saved from death by Eric, Thelma's husband, who loses his life that same day in a simple accident. The connection of the three lives continue through World War II as each does their part for the war. Thelma works in the shipyard, painting ships for the Navy. George is a Marine and his first assignment sends him to Guadalcanal. Luther joins the Army and is assigned the 761st Tank division. War changes so many things and people. What do you take, when have you had enough? What do you hold on to, what do you give up. The Last Thing You Surrender takes us into the lives of these characters as they grapple with the changes in their lives.
