really liked it
bookshelves: fantasy
Read from January 13 to 17, 2012

I was a bit disappointed in Lynch's sophomore effort. The book is well constructed and the action is compelling and exciting, though not even in the same ballpark as Lies but there is a certain lack of structure, especially in the latter third of the book. It seems rushed and unpolished and the characters seem jaded and more jerked along by handlers than brilliant schemers. I especially did not like the new female characters introduced by Lynch. One seemed one-dimensional, and the other, the big-bad pirate captain seemed simply boring. The villains were more interesting, at least some of them. All in all, RSuRS was a bit of a let down. Hopefully Republic of Thieves will be better.

Quotes Dragos Liked

Scott Lynch
“Mew," the kitten retorted, locking gazes with him. It had the expression common to all kittens, that of a tyrant in the becoming. 'I was comfortable, and you dared to move,' those jade eyes said. 'For that you must die.' When it became apparent to the cat that its two or three pounds of mass were insufficient to break Locke's neck with one mighty snap, it put its paws on his shoulders and began sharing its drool-covered nose with his lips. He recoiled.”
