really liked it

A friend lent me this book way too long ago. On my desk it sat for a couple of years. Finally motivated to get through a backlog of books to read, I picked it up, knowing nothing about the story, the characters or even the author.

I found that even though not a lot of epic actions took place in this story, it was still spell-binding. Once I got into it, it was hard to put it down. The story of Larry Darrell, an American whose near-death war experience led him on a quest for the meaning of life, was wonderfully told. It contrasted completely with the other characters driven by status. Somerset Maugham writes his characters coolly with a keen sense of their flaws, yet still manages to find the beauty and goodness in each one.

It's a beautiful tale. I'm just sorry it took me so long to find out.
