Anna Dressed in Blood
By Kendare Blake

Cas has been carrying on the family business for years. Ever since his father’s death in New Orleans when he was a little boy, Cas has been doing his best to succeed. After all, he has to be good at his job. There aren’t that many professional ghost hunters around to pick up his slack. Cas travels the country with his mother, a witch, and their cat who is basically a ghost smoke alarm. While dispatching a lonely highway ghost destined to seek vengeance for his horrific death, Cas learns of a ghost in Canada of a girl who was brutally murdered in the 1950s that may be his biggest challenge yet. The ghost, called Anna Dressed in Blood, haunts her home; viciously killing anyone who even sticks a toe over the threshold. Cas views every encounter he has experienced as practice for finally taking on the ghost that killed his father. If he can beat Anna armed with his lethal athame, he just may be ready to avenge his father.

When Cas and his mother arrive in the small town, Cas quickly latches on to Carmel, the most popular girl in school, in hopes of gleaning information or rumors about Anna. His information-seeking plans turn to close encounters when a prank devised by Carmel’s ex-boyfriend, Mike, and his buddies bring them all to Anna’s house. As Mike tries to trap Cas in the house, Anna appears, unhappy about the uninvited houseguests. Cas barely escapes with the help of Thomas, a pseudo-psychic and beginner witch, but Mike is not so lucky. Now that Cas sees what Anna is capable of, his plans to destroy her seem insignificant. Although, Cas can’t help but think about why Anna allowed him to live. As the truth about Anna’s murder is revealed to Cas and his friends, he begins to wonder just how responsible Anna is for her actions.

Anna Dressed in Blood is a spooky, bone-chilling tale about what happens when a ghost hunter gets second thoughts about doing what his job entails. Blake provides a number of twists and turns, some predictable and some shocking, as the relationship between Cas and Anna develops. While some categorize this story as a romance, I would not. While some romantic tendencies exist, Cas’s story consists more of survival, legacy, guilt, and vengeance. Fans of the TV show Supernatural will love to experience Cas’s story.
