I will start with how well it starts and captures your attention from the very beginning. I was thinking, like with most other books, that it would take a couple of chapters for the story to come together and catch your attention. Boy was I wrong! From chapter one you want to know what is going to happen, and you can't put the book down.
I loved how characters have depths to them. They all have their goods and their bad. One of the main character, Judas, likes helping people but knows that by doing so he can put people he is set to protect in danger. Julie is plunged into this crazy, new, magical world, and while anyone would trust their teacher with no shred of doubt, I liked how she knew she depended on Judas, but also was suspicious of the information he would hold from her and such.
The world is brilliant in its diversity of species, how they interact with one other, their prejudices and history. There are unicorns, centaurs, elves, wizards and so much more. All with their unique tradition, history and abilities. It makes it feel very realistic, unique and very magical.
I will admit that there were some chapters that made me uncomfortable. I was under the impression that I knew what adult fantasy was, but seems I was wrong. the theme of sex used as a weapon is very common, but if you are not into the whole "pain will bring you pleasure" kind of thing, you might want to rethink this book. Or just skip those chapters.
Something very different that I don't think I have seen in many other books is that you get to see the story develop from the point of view of the "bad" people or antagonists. I don't want to say too much, but I liked how I get to see how they create their plans, and how they interact with others to join them, and why they are doing it.
Overall, it was a fantastic word and brilliant characters. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre. It's definitely a must read.
