The beginning of the Sandman series is not as strong as some of the later segments, although I still enjoyed it quite a bit. I love the artist who did most of this volume, Sam Keith, and he went on to do another of my favorite comics, The Maxx.

This story line is much more linear and straightforward than most of the Sandman volumes. It's also very violent and creepy at times. Honestly, if you want to get a sense for what the Sandman is like, I would start with a different volume, and come back to this one.
