it was amazing

I will be absolutely honest with you when I first started reading Free Love and the Sexual Revolution – Finding Yourself by Removing Sexual Boundaries I wasn’t sure what to expect. Based on the title of the book I honestly thought it was going to be something almost pornographic in nature. This book definitely teaches you that you cannot judge a book simply by its title. I am glad I decided to go ahead and read this book because it was a very pleasant surprise.

Free Love and the Sexual Revolution covers some of the life story of John and Barbara Williamson. The book opens up talking a little bit about Barbara’s past, including her dismal childhood. Opening with this background is vital to understanding the rest of the book because Barbara’s childhood really shaped who she was and what she was looking for in life. The first few chapters also give you an insight into who Barbara is as they provide details about how hard Barbara worked and how successful she became before meeting John.

During her early career in insurance, Barbara meets John through work as she is trying to sell him insurance. A rather confident saleswomen, Barbara finds herself stumbling with her sales pitch when talking to John. There was just something about him that she couldn’t quite put her finger on. Barbara and John go out a few times and really hit it off. With these two there are no secrets, they both know what they want and aren’t afraid to go after it. Their relationship and intimacy is what sets the stage for Sandstone.

Within 5 weeks of dating and getting to know one another, John and Barbara are married. They both know that in order for their relationship to work they needed to have what we now refer to as an open marriage. They need to find others who had a similar outlook to relationships as they themselves had, which is how Sandstone came about. The book talks all about how Sandstone came about, how much work was involved in getting it up and going, and just what it meant to Barbara and John, as well as a few other live in members.

Free Love and Sexual Revolution does discuss details about what it was like living at Sandstone. The public viewed Sandstone as just another nudist club, but in reading this book you find out it was much more than that. Sure Sandstone had its parties, but it was also creating a specific lifestyle for a certain group of like minded people. Free Love and the Sexual Revolution talks about the trials that Sandstone and its members faced and how they tried to combat those trials with positive publicity. They wanted to educate the public about what they were so they never passed up an interview or media request.

As the book follows Barbara and John’s life, it also talks about their life after Sandstone and the amazing things they have accomplished.
