** spoiler alert ** The impoverished companion to the shrewish dowager duchess of Wyndham, Grace is surprised by a highwayman on the way back from a ball. Jack Audley, a devil-may-care highwayman, is quickly recognized to be the son of the dowager duchess's middle son; if his legitimacy is proven, he is the true Duke of Wyndham.

I was disappointed with this one, since Julia Quinn is usually such a vibrant author. Jack is a fun hero, irreverent and charming. But Grace is just so pale and wan. She doesn't ever have a personality, and she just doesn't engage the reader. That made this book a real oddity, with the other strong personalities completely engulfing Grace. There were also some really odd issues floating around with Jack, especially his dyslexia and complex about "killing" his cousin.
