really liked it

An immensely impressive book. Sure, it's often pretentious (esp. when the characters go all philosophical) and even sometimes dull, but I've never read a novel that so captures an era and its characters (US Army life in Hawaii circa 1941) so well and deeply. The novel is a wonderful time machine.
