really liked it
bookshelves: childrens-lit, classics

I enjoyed this coming-of-age novel much more than I expected since I'm not a big reader of animal stories. The author's voice was very authentic and I loved the mixture of home-spun faith, drama and sheer grit. The only reason I did not give it five stars is because there is a tragedy near the end and the author took pains to explain why God let it happen, which seemed too forced to me. How can anyone really know the mind of God?

In spite of that, I think this would make a wonderful family read-aloud.
